MountainsMount Kenya & Mount Kilimanjaro

Whilst an ascent of Mount Kenya is certainly for the adventurous, even those without special climbing skills can reach Lenana the third highest of Mount Kenya's three peaks which stands at a height of 4,986 metres (16,358 feet.) The highest peaks of Nelion at 5,188m and Batian at 5,199m are altogether more challenging and are for the experienced climber only.

Climbing Mount Kenya

There are several routes to climb Mount Kenya but the most popular is the Sirimon route which starts on the northwest side of the mountain near Nanyuki. This is the dry side of the mountain and this route is the most scenic offering some of the finest walking in Africa . Over a period of four or five days you will work your way up through forest, moorland and alpine vegetation before you reach the wide ridge approach to the summit area.

Mount Kenya can be climbed at all times of the year although if possible it is best to avoid the long rains that usually start in mid March and may last until mid June, and the short rains from late October to late November.

Even though Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain, the world's highest free standing mountain and one of the world's largest volcanoes, it is actually an easier climb than Mount Kenya as it is possible to hike all the way to the summit at Uhuru Peak which stands at 5895 metres (19,340 feet).

The Marangu route, often referred to as the "tourist route", is the most popular path up Kilimanjaro. The route starts at Marangu Gate in Tanzania and the six or seven day ascent will take you through dense montane forest, alpine meadow and moorlands dominated by giant senecias and lobelias to a barren landscape of rock and scree as you approach the summit.

Whilst Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time of the year, the best months are December to March, and July to October, which are usually dry with a minimum of cloud.

On both mountains, comfortable bunkhouse accommodation en route adds to the sense of adventure and excitement and the camaraderie that develops between you and your fellow trekkers will make your expedition all the more memorable. Your guides won't work you too hard though - all equipment and supplies are portered, and a cook prepares your meals!
