Amboseli Porini Bush Camp

Amboseli Porini Camp is located in the Selenkay Conservation Area, a 15,000 acre private game reserve within a vast tract of land owned by the Kisonko clan of the Maasai people and located near the northern boundary of Amboseli National Park.

The camp at dusk

Selenkay is an important dispersal area for wildlife moving in and out of Amboseli and holds a wide variety of species.  In addition to the better known big game such as elephant, leopard, cheetah, giraffe and zebra, there are a number of less commonly seen species including caracal, African wildcat, civet, gerenuk, lesser kudu and striped hyena.  The private four wheel drive track links Selenkay to Amboseli National Park which means that game drives can be enjoyed in the park as well as in Porini’s own exclusive reserve.  One of the major benefits of viewing animals in a conservation area is that the wildlife is truly wild and behaves more naturally than in the parks where they are habituated to the presence of larger numbers of vehicles.

The local Maasai community has set aside the Selenkay Conservation Area as a reserve for wildlife and is now receiving an income from tourist activities which is used to fund community projects such as schools and improved water supplies.  The majority of the camp staff are Maasai and their involvement in protecting and conserving wildlife has led to a significant increase in wildlife numbers in recent years.

Selenkay is 150 kms from Nairobi which is a 3 hour drive mostly on tarmac.  The Amboseli airstrip can also be used with daily scheduled flights from Nairobi.

Comfortably appointed guest tents

The camp is small and exclusive accommodating a maximum of just 18 guests in 9 spacious tents situated amongst shady acacia trees.  The tents are large and comfortably furnished with solar powered electric lights and an ensuite bathroom with shower, washbasin and flush toilet.  Meals are enjoyed beneath the acacias and after dinner is a particularly special time as you sit around the campfire listening to the unique sound of the African night.  Food is excellent with home baked bread, fresh salads and high quality meals prepared by the camp chef and all meals and a range of drinks are included in the cost of your experience.

Within the Selenkay conservancy you will enjoy morning, evening and night game drives in custom built open sided 4x4s with qualified safari guides.  After a sunset drink in the bush you will then experience a night game drive which will give you the opportunity of observing many elusive nocturnal animals such as aardvark, serval, caracal and bat eared fox.

A guided walk through the conservancy with a Maasai tracker will give you a different perspective as you are introduced you to the various indigenous animals and plants and their importance to the lives of the local people.
