Relaxed pace of life in Lamu
Lamu
Visiting Lamu is like entering another world. It is a peaceful tropical island just off the northern coastline of Kenya where life is lived at its own relaxed pace. The island has rolling dunes and seemingly endless beaches, amongst the very best in Kenya.

The fascinating town of Lamu has a rich and varied history. Founded in the 14th century as a Swahili settlement, some of its mosques date back to the 14th and 15th centuries and the majority of the other buildings in the town are late 18 th century. Almost unchanged over the last 200 years, its narrow streets, stone buildings with beautiful carved doors, busy waterfront teeming with dhows and fascinating people belong to a bygone age. Due to the narrowness of the streets there are no vehicles on the island and the dhow and donkey remain the dominant form of transport making this a perfect place to explore on foot.
The society here is built on a strong respect for the past and for others with tradition and custom being all important. As a result, the warm, friendly and welcoming people of Lamu are a major part of the island's appeal.
